El passat divendres 21, el doctorand Lluís Gaya Piqué, va defensar, a la biblioteca de l’Observatori de l’Ebre, la seva tesi doctoral “Analysis of the Geomagnetic field in Antartica from near-surface and satellite data” (Anàlisi del camp geomagnètic a l’Antàrtida a partir de dades de superfície i de satèl•lit). La defensa, en realitzar-se en anglès, comporta que el nou doctor tingui el títol de Doctor Europeu en Física per la Universitat Ramon Llull. El tribunal avaluà la tesi amb la màxima qualificació: Excel•lent Cum Laude. Aquesta és la segona tesi que es llegeix a l’Observatori de l’Ebre des que és Institut Universitari de la Universitat Ramon Llull. El treball s’ha basat en el desenvolupament d’un model regional de camp magnètic de referència per a l’Antàrtida i els mars que l’envolten. El model inclou dades de camp magnètic enregistrades a observatoris antàrtics, dades de sis missions satel•litals, i també mesures obtingudes a través d’un globus estratosféric. Amb aquest model, el Dr. Gaya millora els models actuals de camp magnètic per a l’Antàrtida, amb la qual cosa es pretén obtenir una imatge més realística de la crosta terrestre a través de l’estudi de les anomalies magnètiques, amb totes les implicacions geològiques que se’n deriven. La tesi ha estat codirigida pels doctors Joan Miquel Torta, director de l’Observatori de l’Ebre, i Angelo de Santis, cap de la Unitat de Geomagnetisme de l'Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) italià, i s’ha realitzat bàsicament durant una estada de tres anys que el Dr. Gaya ha realitzat al INGV a Roma. En el marc de l’any del centenari de l’Observatori de l’Ebre, del 28 de setembre fins l’1 d’octubre es realitzarà el Congrés internacional Challenges for Geomagnetism, Aeronomy and Seismology in the XXI Century. Aquest Congrés internacional comptarà amb la participació d’uns setanta especialistes, dels que al voltant de trenta són estrangers, en els camps del geomagnetisme, aeronomia i sismologia. L’àmbit del congrés recull les principals línies de recerca de l’Observatori de l’Ebre i està estructurat de manera que diferents especialistes de reconegut prestigi internacional obrin, desprès d’una conferencia, un torn de presentacions curtes i discussions entre tots els presents. El congrés està adreçat bàsicament a les següents qüestions: • És encara l’observació dels paràmetres geofísics necessària? Quan tindrem suficient informació? • Com i des d’on s’han de fer les noves observacions? • Fins quin punt els nostres models reflecteixen la realitat? En quina direcció poden ser millorats? • Temes frontera i multidisciplinars que incloguin els camps del geomagnetisme, aeronomia i sismologia. Com es pot apreciar la intenció d’aquest congrés és obrir la discussió de com abordar els nous reptes científics, en particular en el camp de l’observació geofísica, per tal d’optimitzar els recursos obtenint els millors resultats, i millorar els models geofísics per tal que reflecteixin de la forma més acurada possible la realitat. Els actes es realitzaran a la Cambra de Comerç de Tortosa i a l’Observatori de l’Ebre. A la primera seu es faran les conferències i discussions mentre que a la segona hi haurà la presentació i discussió dels pòsters. Així mateix, dintre dels actes del Congrés, el dimecres 29 a les 13:45 h. a la Cambra de Comerç de Tortosa, l'Excm. i Mgfca. Rectora de la Universitat Ramon Llull Esther Giménez-Salinas lliurarà la Medalla al Mèrit Científic de la Universitat Ramon Llull. Aquest guardó s'atorgarà al P. J. Oriol Cardús en reconeixement de la seva trajectòria científica de tants anys i la seva tasca de representació en nom de l'Observatori a innombrables fòrums nacionals i sobretot internacionals. Aquest congrés està copatrocinat pel Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia, pel Departament d’Universitats, Recerca i Societat de la Informació, i per la International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA).
